Pre-Wash Stain remover (I use the Napisan brand)... do whatever it says on the bottle (which is basically spray stain then chuck it in the wash... I'm all for minimising manual labour!)

I have a lot of uncrystallized dark brown sugar - the lumpy one... I don't really use it in my coffee, and it seems like it doesn't work well in recipes that require regular sugar.

What could I do with it? Any recipe that requires it that you know of?

Are you talking about the kind of brown sugar that's soft and compactible? If so, that's usually used in baking, and I can give you a million recipes that call for brown sugar.

However, try cooking a sweet potato in the microwave. When it's done, split it open and top with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Yum!

I (as a novice young person living out of home) have neglected my shower tiles and now they are stained with white powder stuff.

What do I use to remove it, and how do I make sure I don't get myself into this situation again ?

Put it on porridge or Cream of Wheat. You can use half white half brown for biscuits, or in crumble topping.

Put a pinch in with malt vinegar and mustard seeds (sesame oil optional) when you stir fry red cabbage...

I love brown sugar!

How do i clean my very greasy vents above my stove? They are a metal mesh type thing which can be removed.. they are supposed to be silver but sadly they have been neglected and are now an ikky grease colour

I would take them out and clean them in the sink with a product called Goo Gone, specifically made for greasy, sticky messes.

If you don't have Goo Gone in your part of the world, I would soak them in a very strong solution of hot water and a liquid dish soap specifically formulated for grease, such as Dawn.

If that fails, take them outside and soak in a dishpan with an ammonia solution. Be sure to wear gloves and only work in a well ventilated area.

I'll have to buy some cabbage at some point, Kisbee, you're totally right.

Bec, sometimes vinegar, salt, and baking soda help... I use them a lot, but I don't know how greasy those are...

Depending on how bad they are bec... dishwasher! I chucked mine in their once as an experiment and they came out great... now that it requires very little effort from me, they get cleaned way more often!!!

Holly, if you want to go to some trouble, this is a great recipe for cinnamon rolls:

Pecan Cinnamon Buns

Ingredients:

Filling:
3/4 cup (packed and leveled) dark brown sugar (but light brown is okay, too)
1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Dough:
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
9 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and divided into 6, 1, and 3 tablespoons

Icing:
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons Mascarpone cheese (a mild, Italian cream cheese)
2 tablespoons buttermilk

FOR FILLING: Combine brown sugar, chopped nuts, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a medium-sized bowl. Stir in thoroughly 2 tablespoons melted butter; mixture will be crumbly. Set aside.

FOR DOUGH: Preheat oven to 425º F. Lightly grease the bottom and sides of a 10-inch-diameter cake pan with 2-inch-high sides.

Whisk 2 1/2 cups flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Stir buttermilk and 6 tablespoons melted butter into dry ingredients with a fork until lightly blended. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface, such as a bread board, and knead lightly until just blended, about 8 turns. Do not over-knead.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 12 x 10-inch rectangle. Brush the dough with 1 tablespoon melted butter. Sprinkle the filling evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch plain border on one of the long sides of the rectangle. Press the filling gently onto the dough to compact it slightly. Beginning at the long end opposite to the plain border, roll up the dough roulade- or jelly-roll style. Pinch the border of the dough to seal in the filling. Cut the dough crosswise into 8 equal slices.

Place 1 bun, or slice, in the center of prepared cake pan; surround with remaining 7 buns, spacing them slightly apart. The buns will expand to fill the spaces during baking. Brush the tops of the buns with the remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter. Bake buns until golden brown, about 25 minutes. Some filling may come out of the sides of the buns. Cool buns in the pan on a rack 5 minutes. Drizzle icing over warm buns, then serve warm or at room temperature.

FOR ICING: Beat together the powdered sugar, Mascarpone cheese, and 2 tablespoons buttermilk until smooth.

These cookies are great, too:

Death by Chocolate Cookies

2 packages (8 squares each) semi-sweet baking chocolate, divided
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
2 cups chopped walnuts

Chop 8 squares (1 package) of the chocolate; set aside. Microwave remaining 8 squares of chocolate in large microwave bowl on high 2-3 minutes. Stir until chocolate is melted and smooth. Stir in sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla with wooden spoon until well blended. Stir in flour and baking powder. Stir in reserved chopped chocolate and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake at 350 degrees for 13-17 minutes or until cookies feel set to the touch. Cool on cookie sheets for 5 minutes. Cool completely on wire rack. Makes about 18 large cookies.

*If omitting nuts, add 1/4 cup of flour to the mixture to prevent spreading.

wow, ODB - you're the best! I think I'll steer clear of troublesome recipes until the end of the term, but the chocolate cookies seem doable... now - how much would two pachages of chocolate be, in terms of weight?

Sadly, I dont have a dishwasher so it will need to be manual labour

Bec, we used to throw the ones from the Lodge (which were only done once a year but were ALWAYS disgusting!) into a bucket of hot water with dishwasher powder and then just leave them to soak for a couple of hours. Always came out shiny! For some reason the dishwasher powder was the key, worked much better than the regular liqued you use to handwash stuff.

Powdered Borax (with baking soda and vinegar) will work but might be harder to find than dishwashing powder!

Mouldy Books!

I know, it sounds horrible. I have books that have been in storage for about three years, a tin shed type storage (so when it got hot it was bloody hot in there) and a couple of the books (one a hard cover) have obviously gotten a little damp in that time - but they are totally dry now, just some of the pages are sticking together and there is some blotching of a black dry mould, there doesn't seem to be any moisture in it it at all.

1) Is this going to spread to my other books (the other books in storage, even the ones in the same bag are all fine)?

2) How do i stop it getting worse? I mean i know i can't spray them in Exit Mould, they are books, but what can i do?

I don't know if they are replacable, with the trouble i went to to get one of these in the first place i think possible not, but it is just oooky if nothing else.

I use exit mould and then scrub.
Then I use some kind of Shower Power spray that you spray on after you shower to maintain.
The steam then 'cleans' it away the next time you shower.

HELP NEEDED

What I think is my lint trap (it's in the middle of my washing machine, down this tube like thing where the fabric softener goes) anyways the mesh bag thing is all icky.
I think it might be a bit mouldy or has some lint/softener build up in it...

Is there any way to clean it, or do I need to replace it?
